The World bank will be increasing the amount of funds allocated and disbursed to low income countries this year. Mr Robert Zoellick, the President of the Bank, revealed International Development Association (IDA), the branch of the bank that directly manages and coordinates the funds for the poor country, has received $49.3 billion, an increase of 18 percent, for this year.
The additional funds came mostly from developed countries, despite these countries facing local pressure to cut deficits or deal to address their own economic woes.
It is also observed that middle income countries are rising to be donors for the first time, thereby increasing base for funds generation for the Bank.
The big question, however, is whether the World Bank and the donor countries will implement measures to ensure every penny added to the coffers for the poor will be brought to count.
