Michael Ranneberger intends good for Kenya. No doubt. I do wish good for my country. No doubt. But one Ranneberger is simply not doing things right.
Kenya urgently needs institutional reforms; at least many people, borrowing from modernization theory, argue so. (Of course, my stance is different. I have always argued that Kenya needs a strong people, an informed electorate first…Let’s talk about these later on.) Fine. True, contemporary political will has to welcome the reforms. And where the political will is reluctant, as it has happened many times, well-calculated ‘push’ is necessary, but sometimes it might not be sufficient.
I believe that Kenyans themselves should be in a position to push for reforms. Through the parliament, civil societies, demonstrations, petitions, media etc. Not through the Ranneberger ways. Not through imperialistic, punitive threats. Not through flashing out “Obama and Clinton are watching keenly” placards on a whim.
We Kenyans have been through worse. And we have pulled through! What is this Agenda Four gobbledygook?
